Our Mission and Vision Statements and a Summary of Why IAMSHE is needed
IAMSHE’s mission is to redress the inequity of women’s representation in theater by spotlighting the historical and cultural significance of women. We do this by actively facilitating the development of women’s roles as actors, writers, producers, designers, directors, and artistic directors through research, development of plays, seeking out plays that emphasize women's roles, and by developing workshops to explore women's significance and creativity in our cultures.
Our vision is to empower women by providing a forum for women’s contributions to history and culture to be researched, explored, and exposed through the use of written, visual, and performance arts. By producing powerful, woman-focused theatrical and experiential works; IAMSHE encourages participation in the arts, engagement in the world around us, and the development of latent talents. We develop immersive networking events and workshops with researched curriculum and powerful discussions. We create opportunities for women to engage in positive dialogue and constructive collaborations that build bridges thus moving our community forward towards a shared future.
I Am She -- She who has been forgotten, She who has been ignored - She who is faceless, voiceless, and whose story is yet to be told. Women’s global contributions are vast, yet often overlooked and forgotten. We want to change that in our small corner of the world.
Richmond, Virginia is an area rich in performing arts. With fourteen professional theater companies, three improvisational theaters, and two nationally-respected liberal arts universities creating hundreds of actors and directors every year, the 1.2 million Richmond-area residents strongly support live theater.
There is a children’s theater, an African-American theatre, an historic events theater, several fringe theaters, and lots of musicals. And yet - until now there has been no theater dedicated to the experience and voice of women. No voices intentionally tell the stories of over half of the population. No one is creating a space to celebrate all that women have brought and continue to bring into our lives.
